Redbird Flight today released a major upgrade to its fleet of training devices, making them fully compatible with 64-bit simulation engines. Available on all Redbird devices, the upgrade takes full advantage of the performance enhancements available in the core simulation engine, Lockheed Martin’s Prepar3D. In addition, it boosts the overall performance of the simulation and improves the graphics rendering capabilities, providing a smoother and more immersive environment for pilots flying in the simulated world.
The attention to detail in the graphics is apparent both in the air and the airport environment, where familiar landmarks and accurate runway slopes and surfaces better prepare pilots for takeoffs and landings at their departure and destination airports. These enhancements provide for more realistic flying conditions under visual and instrument flight rules.
True to Redbird’s longstanding zero obsolescence policy, the company developed a retrofit solution for all its devices regardless of age. These retrofit solutions allow customers with devices dating back to the company's inception in 2007 to take full advantage of the performance enhancements and keep their devices on the cutting edge.
The visual improvements and reduction in latency enabled by 64-bit versions of Prepar3D support Redbird’s continued research and development of mixed-reality simulation solutions for general aviation, military, and primary, secondary, and post-secondary education applications. The company began delivering mixed-reality training devices to the United States Air Force in 2022, and it plans to implement the technology into its offerings for general aviation flight training and K-12 education.
Redbird unveiled a proof-of-concept for its first direct-to-consumer mixed-reality training device last year at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Developed on the same platform as the company’s FAA-approved Basic Aviation Training Device, the Redbird TD, the device adds a mixed-reality headset that amplifies the visual cues in the virtual world without impeding the ability to see and interact with real-world flight controls. At AirVenture 2023, the device is on display in the Redbird exhibit, booth number 301.
The company has begun manufacturing its current line of training devices with a 64-bit simulation engine, and it expects to begin deliveries in August 2023.
