At FLYING Media Group’s annual appreciation and awards presentation during the week of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, Redbird Flight was presented with a 2023 Editor’s Choice Award for its personalized proficiency training app, Redbird Pro.
Redbird Pro is a first-of-its-kind pilot proficiency solution that tailors training to the individual needs and goals of a general aviation pilot. Unlike off-the-shelf proficiency training programs, Redbird Pro uses an AI-based learning algorithm to recommend training tasks based on the knowledge and skill areas a pilot needs to work on the most.
Redbird announced the beta program for the app at AirVenture 2021 and released it to the App Store and Google Play the following February. Since then, the company has added a host of new content and benefits to the subscription-based app, including challenging new VFR and IFR scenarios and training content from AOPA Air Safety Institute, Flying Magazine, and Plane & Pilot.
Proficiency-focused organizations across general aviation offer annual discounts on Redbird Pro subscriptions as a benefit to their customers and members. Avemco Insurance Company offers its customers a 20% discount on Redbird Pro annual plans, and Avemco pilots who use Redbird Pro in their proficiency training are eligible for discounts on their annual insurance premiums through the Avemco Safety Rewards Program.
The Experimental Aircraft Association also offers its members a 20% discount on Redbird Pro annual plans, and the organization enables pilots to use the app for scenario-based training in one of the many Redbird Advanced Aviation Training Devices at its year-round Pilot Proficiency Center.
“The market has embraced Redbird Pro as a means of taking feasible steps toward reducing general aviation incident and accident rates,” said Redbird Vice President of Marketing Josh Harnagel. “The positive feedback we have received from general aviation pilots who use the app daily in their training reaffirms the potential and importance of a more personalized approach to gaining and maintaining proficiency. GA recognizes the benefits of Redbird Pro, and our roadmap for the app will only increase the value it brings to subscribers.”
In the next month, Redbird will introduce two new features to Redbird Pro. Badges will support the gamified approach of the app, rewarding pilots for their training efforts and encouraging them to keep working toward the next milestone in their proficiency. Collections will provide pilots with a curated list of tasks pertinent to specific areas of their training, allowing them to allot additional focus to knowledge and skill areas aligned with their individual goals. Redbird is designing Collections to account for additional variables impacting proficiency, providing pilots opportunities to seek training for the aircraft they fly, an upcoming flight plan, or a knowledge and skill area where they want to improve their proficiency more quickly.
